Fiji Starts The Season Off Strong
The Fiji men started their all-fraternity flag football league yesterday off with a tough match up versus the men of Pi Kappa Alpha. Our boys looked out of sync for the whole first half, giving up a long touchdown drive, throwing an interception, and giving up a ‘Hail Mary’ touchdown pass right before the half. Down 14-0 going into the second half, things looked bleak for the gentlemen of Fiji. The team had a different swagger in the second half however. Quarterback Colby Osbourne orchestrated a long drive that was knocking on the opponent’s door, but was intercepted on the 2 yard line. The very next play sophomore Samuel Knott tipped a pass from the enemy quarterback and made a diving catch to intercept the ball on the 5 yard line and put the men of Chi Eta back in the red zone. Fiji punched the ball in for the touchdown but missed the 2-point conversion, leaving the score at 14-6. The Fiji defense found themselves the next possession and forced a punt which was returned by Chi Eta speedster Chris Heil. The Fiji offense methodically drove the ball down and scored a touchdown with two minutes left in the game. The decision of the game was certainly when the offense decided to go for the win and try for the unique 3-point conversion that is allowed in WKU’s flag football. A long pass from Osbourne sailed over the heads of his receivers, but a clear personal foul on the opposing rusher running the Fiji blocker over put the offense back in business and even closer to their goal. Osbourne scrambled and bought just enough time to find junior Dylan Ward hiding from the defense in the back of the end zone, putting Fiji up 15-14. The Fiji faithful erupted in cheers! But their task was not yet completed. Pi Kappa Alpha had plenty of time and timeouts to rally and make a comeback. On their first try the ball was intercepted by all-round athlete Bryan Hartzell and taken all the way back to the end zone, but a flag on the play negated all of his hard work. The defense held strong for a few more plays until finally getting an interception from Osbourne who was filling in on defense, sealing a win for the men of Phi Gamma Delta. What a great night for all those involved and an exciting start to the flag football season!
